1667. That is the key. No nothing to do with year, though there must have been something going on that year. As there are things going on every year. Perhaps I will remember to look it up, perhaps not.
Like I said this has not to do with that.
“So what is the 1667 for?”
Yes back to topic. 1667 is the number of words I must write a day in November. Well technically it is 1666.666666, but 1667 is better and works. You need a few extra because no two word counts work just the same. So as I have to right them then I though it best to get started now. As I have a different set up and need to get used to it. And see that I can get my words done and feed my troops still. They, the folks in my game, need to get used to seeing less of me. It is going to be interesting for all to see how this plays out.
But I can’t not write. It just is not possible to go though a November and not right. It has gotten under my skin. I am not sure just what I will write but I know I will write. There are to may ideas bouncing around, and what makes it to the page may be nothing like any thing in my head.
“Wait why are must you write a set number of words in November? And for that matter why am I here? That is why are you talking to your self like this?”
Ok one at a time. First I am doing it like that for two reasons. One it helps me go where I need to. Keeps me from moving all over. (and has the added bonus of reminding me of my phil. papers, :) Asking questions and answering them is a nice way to keep things moving where you want the to. It alls is a good way to have arguments in a page, as I might show anther time.
Second it helps with word count. Not that I do a lot of padding, that is writing things that you know will disappear during editing, but some happens. There are days where every word is a struggle and so some non-since happens. Or those times when your fingers somehow kill the wrong person and you need to turn it in to a dream. You see the one thing you should not worry about is deleting things, that is January is for. The key thing for November is just getting the words on the page. A thing that is not all ways as easy as it sounds. Trust me.
If there is something you just cant stand change it to white and move on. When you go back tio edit you might feel different, or it might be the thing to spark anther idea. Even if in and of it self it is useless. Well that is what you should do, but it is not all ways something I can do I can’t help but edit a bit as I write. But will not remove big chunks, just small. It is all about compromises.
But then I have not told you why I am doing this in the first place yet, have I? Well if you have stumbled upon these ramblings of mine, or my facebook page, you might just know all ready. But for those ho don’t it is for NaNoWriMo. There you go.
“Wait! Just what is that Wrima thing?”
Na No Wri Mo. National Novel Writing Month. It is a contest. No that is not right, as that implies judging. And there is no judging. Um Lets go with challenge, a self challenge. Yes that is better. So it is a challenge to write 500000 words in a month. It says novle, but no one is reading what you write unless you show it to them. There are those that will right non-fiction, those that write plays, or other things.
And there are this few sad souls that feel it necessary to cheat there selves and just write copy one word overt and over, or even to just cut text from other places and put it in the word counter. Some of them to show how pointless it is, how silly we all are. Others because they can. There will always be some like that. But they are only hurting there selves. There is no curve here as they might be on a test.
“So what do you get out of it?”
The joy have having done it. Seeing the word count bar turning from gray to green to purple, and certificate. But the key is the know you can, that wonder at having written all those words. Then there has been a self publishing company that offers the winners, that is everyone who made it to 50000 words a free copy of there book. But the key thing you get is the joy. The knowledge that you did it, that you can do it.
“I you don’t edit why would you want a copy?”
You coupon is good for six mounts so you have time to finish up and do some editing. And there is something so amazing about getting you book and seeing all those words you have writing and knowing you made it. That it was all you. The power of your mind. But you don’t have to use it for your nano book,. It can be used for anything. And no it doesn’t matter if what you use it on is over 500000 words. Heck all of my nano novels have went over, and the ones I got copies of got longer after November. The company doesn’t care.
“So if you get it dose that mean it is for sale?”
They do give you the option to sell your book though them, but nothing forces you to do so. Don’t go into this thinking you will make money. You won’t. even if you write something that gets published your not going to make a lot of money. An writers share of the cost of a book amounts to a few cents. It is not much, most of your favorites will have a second job, or are putting out a lot of books each year just to pay the bills. There are exceptions, of course, but don’t count on being able to live off of writing. No I have been published, and likely wont be. But I have looked into how it works. Go to look at some writers blogs, chances are they will have at lest one post about how they get paid. Some will have posts answering question about getting published as well. (If you can’t find anything on yours let me know and I can give you links to mine. Visiting there pages is all so a good way to keep up on what they are working on, and when the next book will be out. Some share snippets)
As for Nano, visit Nanowrimo.org yes that is .org, not .com. they are a certified non-profit. There is no charge, but they do ask for donations, both for site expenses and there classroom work. There is a separate sight for young writes, with a different set up for word goals. Sorry not a site I have looked at, but you can check it out for details.
The big thing for me is that there are others doing it to. Folks who understand that you don’t always know where a stories is going. That characters can and do have minds of there own. Even if they do come from your head. It is being able to talk to folks who are going though the same thing as you.
